IN SITU SHADES OF SPACES #2
Following the performance that took place at the French Pavilion for the Venice Biennale of Architecture, the art residency Caserna Esperienza Pepe, located on Lido Island, offered me to create an installation within its small 17th century chapel.
The vertically suspended canvas created during the performance at French Pavilion licks the ground, linking the worlds of matter and spirit. Some creepers found in the nearby Jewish cemetery and the garments from the performance also punctuated the space.
The installation came to life once night fell, illuminated only by candles brought into the chapel by the spectators. The sanctum evolving gradually as the light enters, revealing from the depths of shadows the installation to the viewers.
For the inauguration, Enrico Milani offered us a 30 minute improvisation on cello driven by his intuition in this special atmosphere devoured by light and shadow, echoing and extending both the performance of the pavilion and the memories of the chapel history.
